SENER celebrates 25 years in Catalonia as a global supplier of high-tech solutions11/06/2018 (Spain)
SENER has been fully operational in Catalonia since it first opened its headquarters in the region 25 years ago in 1993. Since then, SENER's presence in Catalonia has grown in terms of personnel, expertise and projects; an ascent that has enabled it to become one of the region's leading engineering and technology companies with more than 300 highly qualified employees who perform innovative contracts throughout the world.
To commemorate this anniversary, last Saturday 9 June, SENER celebrated a Family Day by welcoming its professionals and their families into its offices in Cerdanyola del Vallès.
During the event, the director of SENER in Catalonia, Òscar Julià, said: "SENER still remains committed to its strategy of growth and development, both within the region and throughout the world (...) You are fundamental to our success, as you are the base that supports the company's entire infrastructure. We can only achieve what you achieve thanks to your talent, work, commitment, sacrifice, perseverance, collaboration, generosity and ability to innovate (...) I would like to thank you all and congratulate you on behalf of SENER for making the company what it is today. Thanks to you, we are what we are and what we will be". Òscar Julià also mentioned that SENER recently appointed Jorge Unda as new CEO in a move that represents a new era for the group. Following on from this, he stressed that “changes are opportunities to progress; they are challenges that we must convert into more and better projects. The future is in our hands”.
25 years ago (in 1993), SENER commenced operations in the region in a small office on the Rambla de Catalunya. From 1997 to 2004 the company rented a 1,400m2 space on Illa Diagonal, after which it moved to an office building on calle Provença, where it leased an area of 4,000 m2. In 2014, due to a growing number of both employees and increasingly demanding high added value projects, SENER moved to a new building designed by its own architects and equipped with the most modern facilities. The building is an eco-technological construction featuring high-spec rooms where large technology projects can be planned and implemented. The building itself has been designed to save energy and has been granted a Category A Certificate by the Regional Government of Catalonia's Catalan Energy Institute (based on the Energy Certification Scale for Buildings). It also has a Green Certificate issued by Spain's Green Building Council.
The building has an 'InnovAction Space' area dedicated exclusively to innovation where SENER people can exchange information about next generation technologies, systems and projects. It is a space for discourse and participation that has hosted numerous work sessions to encourage innovation, which is an integral part of the company's success.
Over the course of its 25-year history in Catalonia, SENER has become a centre of excellence for highly complex areas of engineering and technology, such as high-tech rail systems; water technologies; ports and coast engineering; civil structures; civil construction; advanced systems for manufacturing and testing, instrumentation and electronics for the science industry and space experimentation; and precision mechatronics for astronomy and large science facilities.
Some of SENER's projects in Catalonia are: international contracts such as components and manufacturing systems for Airbus A350XWB, Airbus A400M and Boeing 787 aircrafts; regasification plants at Gate terminal (The Netherlands) and in Dunkirk (France); the Figueras-Perpignan (Spain-France) high-speed cross-border railway line; the Toluca – Mexico City passenger train; metro systems in Guadalajara (Mexico), Bogotá (Colombia), Panama City (Panama), Algiers and Oran (Algeria), and light metro rail systems in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Lusail (Qatar) and Kaohsiung (Taiwan); and San Antonio Port in Santiago, Chile; the system used to research how ingravity affects muscles, MARES (Muscle Atrophy Research and Exercise System), which is located on the International Space Station, and components for VLT GRAAL and ELT telescopes; participation in the Solar Orbiter satellite project; and ship design using the FORAN System.
Among SENER's major works in Catalonia are: line 9 of the Barcelona metro system, which is Europe's longest driverless metro line; the third runway of El Prat de Llobregat Airport; Barcelona port Costa Cruceros and TERCAT terminals; The Barcelona Port Authority moveable bridge; and the Sant Feliu de Guíxols port in Girona.
