The SENER-INAER temporary joint venture delivers a new unit of the AB-212 helicopter to the Spanish Navy16/11/2016 (Spain)
The SENER engineering and technology group, in a temporary joint venture with INAER, has delivered the third unit of the modified Agusta Bell 212 Plus (AB-212) helicopter to the Dirección General de Armamento y Material [Directorate General of Armament and Material] (DGAM) of the Spanish Ministry of Defence, within the framework of the AB-212 helicopter life extension program (PEVH).
The work for the helicopter life extension program was awarded to the temporary joint venture formed by SENER and INAER, with SENER leading the design and engineering work, and INAER in charge of a part of the design, the installation, ground and flight testing, and the certification process, together with the INTA (National Institute for Aerospace Technology).
The scope of this life extension program includes the complete replacement of the electrical system as well as the pilots cockpit, which is replaced by a full digital one compatible with night vision googles. The helicopter also includes new high technology systems and features as EFIS (Electronic Flight Instruments System), radar, EO/IR (electro-optical/Infra-red) sensor, AIS transceiver, nav GPS, TAWS (Terrain Awareness Warning System), MTC (Mission Tactical Computer), hoist, MAWS (Missile Warning System), ballistic protection and a gatling type defensive weapon.
This way, the helicopters will be able to operate without restriction in controlled military and civilian airspaces, in accordance with the requirement of new regulations, as well as giving them self-protection and defense systems that will allow them to be deployed in multinational missions with a low-medium threat level.
The first two modified units were delivered to the Navy in December 2015 and March 2016 respectively. Delivery of the remaining aircraft, up to a total of seven units that are part of this program, will be made during 2017 and 2018.
